At first glance, his music is like a darker, scarier brand of hip hop. He doesn’t really rap though. He barely sings. He talks sometimes. Kinda. Chopped samples, slow vintage keyboard sounds, off-tempo drum machines, drugged vocals amidst a cloud of haze…The soundscapes are immediately intoxicating. On most of the tracks they completely surround you.
Chino Amobi, the brains behind DBHB, composes his music with familiar sounds but his frame of reference is so obscured and private that the underlying language at work here would be indecipherable to anyone but him. Not to say this isn't amazing. It is.
